Ian Backlund, MD
Sports Surgery
Born and raised in the southeast, Ian spent time outdoors and riding motocross. Motocross would change his trajectory through life to peruse a higher education and career in orthopaedic surgery following a traumatic accident. This came after realizing the parallels in craftsmanship and mechanics from his childhood hobbies and interests and their application to treating musculoskeletal injuries.
Following high school, he transitioned to the coast for his higher education, entering as a first-generation college student and graduating cum laude from Coastal Carolina University. He spent several years continuing his home theater installation business and perusing research in Orthopaedics with Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas before attending the Medical University of South Carolina with a full merit-based scholarship.
Following medical school, Ian completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Virginia. At UVA he perused research in advancements in the specialty. Some of his projects involved the biomedical engineering students at UVA, where he worked on device design to better the field of orthopaedics. His desire for advancement of orthopaedics drew him to the dynamic and evolving subspecialty of sports medicine. He was honored to have completed his subspecialty training in a fellowship with the world-renowned physicians at The Steadman Clinic and research team at Steadman Philippon Research Institute. Ian was integral in treating individuals there, ranging from professional, elite athletes to weekend warriors. In his time at SPRI he would hone his skills in the art of addressing complex pathology with a deeper understanding and a multi-faceted approach from diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. His interests in this field cover traumatic and degenerative conditions of shoulder, knee and hip. He is thrilled to bring his skillset and passion to Denver Health, treating individuals of all backgrounds.
Ian has many hobbies including home renovation, automobile mechanics, performance engine building, woodworking, graphic design, painting, hiking and snowboarding. His wife and family will join him in Colorado and they look forward to adventures in such an exciting and beautiful part of the country.
